Tutorial: How to clean up your PC after a new Windows Insider Build is installed

So, you just installed a new Insider Build… Great! Then you realize that your current storage numbers are just not right. You have less storage than before the upgrade. What now? How do you recover all your space?

There are quite a few things that you should do after you upgrade to a new build. Whether it be running clenamgr.exe or simply defragmenting your hard drive, these tips help you optimize space and performance on your device.

  1. Use Disk Cleanup

Many users don’t realize that your laptop is full of old files that you don’t need anymore. Disk Cleanup can help you clean up these files and regain up to 30GB of storage on your hard drive.

Here’s how to begin.

Type “cleanmgr.exe” in Cortana or Search

Right click on “Disk Cleanup”

Choose the option to “Run as Administrator”

A scan should pop up. Wait for the scan to check for unnecessary files.

After the scan is complete, a window will open with checkboxes. Check all the boxes (note: if you don’t want to remove recycle bin files be sure to uncheck this box)

Choose “Ok” and if prompted choose yes.

If prompted with a warning that says “If you delete these files you may not be able to go back to the previous version of Windows” Choose “Yes.” (note: if you find that you do need to go back to a previous version of Windows download the Windows Recovery Tool)

Wait till scan finishes for the second time.

You’re good to go! See how much space you’ve freed!

2. Delete old system restore points

Old restore points don’t really help many users unless you are using system restore quite often. To delete these points and free up as much as 10GB of storage on your hard drive, follow these steps below.

Type “System Restore” in Cortana or Search

Choose “Create a Restore Point”

When the window pops up choose “Configure”

Another window will pop up and you need to click “Delete”

You will need to confirm the deletion by clicking “Continue”

Congratulations! How much space have you saved?

3. Download CCleaner

CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool. It removes unused files from your system allowing Windows to run faster and freeing up valuable hard disk space. It also cleans traces of your online activities such as your Internet history. Additionally it contains a fully featured registry cleaner.

I recommend using this product.
